Introduction

Bump allows you to determine with which friends you can safely meet during a pandemic. The mobile application came into being during the peak COVID-19 crisis in 2020 and was specifically focused on creating a high-privacy, user-friendly app for the vulnerable population in Netherlands.

What makes 'BUMP' unique?

There isn't a similar application out there that focuses mainly on high user privacy, very user-friendly experience, and which was able to reverse calculate vulnerability statuses of users back and forth. The system was designed in such a way that it could quickly change configurations depending on new government rules around COVID-19 restrictions. Government rules and restriction during the pandemic was modified and updated almost every week in the Netherlands.

Why not a ready-made solution?

Social interaction restrictions and rules during COVID19 were evolving very rapidly and there was no such application that addressed a pandemic situation and still provided high privacy contact tracing. Many applications that were later released were privacy intrusive and were not able to adapt quickly to the rapidly changing government restrictions!

Bump is a must-have for vulnerable people during a pandemic. Social isolation can lead to mental health problems, especially for young people and the elderly. The user interaction and networking options help prevent loneliness during trying times.

The system design of this WEM application is such that you can also use it for situations where one of your friends has very low immunity. The customizable configurations make it easier to reverse calculate vulnerability statuses for the past, present and future scenarios. The application architecture is designed to be highly scalable and yet make quick vulnerability status calculations.

Nevertheless, they very quickly turned those problem statements into a fully functioning app. Imagine building an application feature that can quickly adapt to new pandemic regulations within a few minutes!
